In My Haven: June 9

This week in my haven we wrapped up the 2022-2023 school year. Whew! I am looking forward to so many things this summer break. From markets, workshops and events for Haven Handmade to family get-togethers and vacations, our summer is going to be full. In between all these big moments, I know there will be some long, lazy days at home. I hope we have a good balance of easy days hanging around our haven and of summer adventures. I love a good project or event to anchor the day, so it can be a challenge for me to savor a day with nothing on the calendar, but I plan to try to savor those days as much as the more action-packed ones.

Speaking of action-packed days, I have a few exciting things coming up this week. First is the Jarvis Square Market in Rogers Park tomorrow, Saturday, June 10, from 10am to 2pm. The weather is going to be perfect and I'm really excited to kick off my summer with this market! Next, I have my Mini Banner workshop at the Maker Lab at the Harold Washington Library on Wednesday, June 14, from 12pm to 2pm. Last I checked, the registration for this event was full, but I would love to bring this workshop to more people and places. Please reach out if you're interested in setting something up. To round out the week, I will be a vendor at Makers at the Market in the Ravenswood neighborhood on Thursday, June 15 from 3pm to 7pm. This will be my first time participating in this market, and I'm looking forward to sharing what I make with some new faces.

Market Preview

Here’s what I've been working on sewing for summer markets. I decided to focus on four main designs: Chicago flags, my newest three adorable animals, a new floral motif, and words. I will still stitch each design on a variety of different products including pillows, bottle totes, colored pencil drawing sets, crayon coloring sets, keychains, bookmarks, and banners. It’s always a challenge to predict what will be most popular at markets, but I think this is a good representation of my signature free motion appliqué style and product range. Do you have any predictions about what my bestseller will be?

More From My Haven

Since life isn't all business, here’s a little more about what’s happening in my haven this week.

  • What I'm Cooking: When the weather is warm, we like to cook our entire dinner on the grill, so I'm always on the look out for side dishes that can be cooked on the grill. This week we made zucchini caprese and it’s definitely one we'll be making again.

  • What I'm Reading: I am still reading The Little Paris Bookshop (Nina George), but I also started reading Remarkably Bright Creatures (Shelby Van Pelt). I had had this book on hold from the library for almost two months when it finally became available this week, so I couldn't wait to start reading!

  • What Joanna is Reading: Joanna has been really into the Babysitters Club series of graphic novels recently. She is also watching the tv series. It's really neat to see her get into the same things that I liked when I was her age.

  • What’s Making Me Happy: The start of summer break!

What's happening in your haven this week?

Warmly,

Beth
