In My Haven: September 1

This week in my haven I'm thinking about change. Change seems to be a big part of fall. Families change their schedules as children return to school. Children change as they move up a grade level. The weather changes from hot to cool (and back to hot, then back to cool…). As the weather changes, we switch our shorts and tank tops to jeans and sweaters. We might change how we eat too, swapping our cold brew for a spiced latte and our salad for soup. Our day to day life adjusts to the changing season in many ways. One of the most popular ways to observe this seasonal transformation is by appreciating the way trees’ leaves change colors in the fall. It's a beautiful time of year, for sure. My newest appliqué design celebrates this beautiful symbol of the changing seasons.

Heart: A Reflection on Change

Each week this section of my journal will be dedicated to one of four broad categories: Heart, Head, Hands, and Hospitality. I will be sharing reflections and resources to help nurture our emotions, our practical lives, our creativity, and our relationships

How does change make you feel? Do you get excited, anxious, overwhelmed or optimistic? I, personally, feel a range of emotions when I'm faced with change. Sometimes I overthink it, tossing and turning with insomnia in anticipation. Other times I take it in stride. And, most frustrating of all, there are times when I want to change something, but don't follow through. No matter what the change is, I think it's important to remember that change, in and of itself, is neither all good or all bad. A difficult change can be for the better just as an easy change can lead to negative consequences. Learning to face change with a more open, accepting and trusting attitude can help me recognize both sides.

To end with, here are some links that I find interesting and relevant to the topic of change:

  • A song that illustrates beautifully how change is inevitable, beautiful and difficult

  • An article explaining how the phrase “turn over a new leaf” originated

  • A painting by one of my favorite artists that shares a helpful mantra for facing change

  • A poem celebrating the change from summer to fall
